About us
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world without poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

Her term begins on July 1, 2024. "ICSID’s dispute resolution services play a pivotal role in the global economy, providing a trusted platform for states and investors to resolve grievances,” said Ajay Banga, President of The World Bank and Chair of the ICSID Administrative Council. “Martina, as Secretary-General of ICSID and a Vice-President of the World Bank, bolsters a leadership team committed to tackling the world's pressing and intertwined challenges." We just updated our summary of investment needs identified in The World Bank's Country Climate and Development Reports (CCDRs). The first version had only 24 countries, now we cover 42 economies. But we find very consistent results, with larger investment needs in lower-income countries. These higher needs are largely due to the large infrastructure and service access gaps that need to be closed to make people and communities more resilient. These gaps make development and climate priorities strongly aligned, as highlighted in all CCDRs. In this update, we also look at the split between the private and the public sector, highlighting vast differences in the estimated potential across sectors and countries. https://lnkd.in/gWwzkp2f

Food Security Update Highlights: • Domestic food price inflation remains high. Inflation higher than 5% is experienced in 57.1% of low-income countries, 63.8% of lower-middle-income countries, 33% of upper-middle-income countries, and 12.7% of high-income countries. • According to the USDA Economic Research Service, global wheat ending stocks for the 2023/24 period are anticipated to hit an eight-year low. This decline is primarily attributed to India's diminished wheat stocks, forecasted to decrease by 2.1 MMT to 6.9 MMT due to faster consumption rates than previously estimated. • According to the latest Global Report on Food Crises, nearly 282 million people in 59 countries and territories experienced high levels of acute hunger in 2023 - a worldwide increase of 24 million from the previous year. This rise was due to the report’s increased coverage of food crisis contexts as well as a sharp deterioration in food security, especially in the Gaza Strip and the Sudan. • According to new research published by the International Food Policy Research Institute, international fertilizer prices have fallen by 50% from their peak in April 2022.
