A collaborative of foundations & financial institutions working to close racial gaps.

About us

Founded in 1991, Living Cities harnesses the collective power of 18 of the world’s largest foundations and financial institutions to build a new type of urban practice geared at getting dramatically better results for low-income people, faster. Together, we are working with cross-sector leaders in cities to develop and scale new approaches to dramatically improve the economic well-being of low-income people. Our investments, research, networks and convenings catalyze fresh thinking and combine support for innovative, comprehensive, local approaches with real-time sharing of knowledge to accelerate and deepen adoption in more places. In 20 years, Living Cities members have collectively invested almost $1 billion, helping shape federal funding programs, redirecting public and private resources, and helping communities to build homes, stores, schools, community facilities and more. Our members are not simply funders. They shape our work and priorities by participating on the Living Cities Board of Directors and four standing committees.

🗓 Join CEO Joe Scantlebury at the Children's Defense Fund (CDF | @childdefender1973) 50th Anniversary National Policy Forum on Nov. 3, 2023, at Howard University's Armour J. Blackburn Center in Washington, D.C. 🌟 In this event, Joe will be part of the plenary session titled "Building Just and Caring Communities: Places Where Young People Thrive." The session dives deep into the social determinants of health, emphasizing the profound impact of place on well-being, life expectancy, mental health, and educational outcomes. Why does place matter? 🏡 Homeownership: Disparities persist, creating economic hurdles. For instance, in Memphis, where our initiatives are making a difference, racial disparities in homeownership rates illuminate deep-rooted challenges. 🏙️ Multidimensional Poverty: In cities like Memphis, where rates of multidimensional poverty are alarmingly high, children suffer the consequences. These economic disparities hinder their growth, perpetuating cycles of inequality. 💡 Our Solution: Joe Scantlebury and the Living Cities team are dedicated to disrupting these cycles. By addressing economic disparities, advocating for affordable housing, and promoting homeownership, we're striving to create just and caring communities. Our approach recognizes the intersection of race, place, and multidimensional poverty, aiming for impactful change. This event is a testament to our commitment to fighting racial injustices and advocating for equitable opportunities. Let's stand together to amplify our voices, raise awareness, and work toward a future where all communities thrive! 🤝 Register today: https://bit.ly/49hkU5F #CDF50thAnniversary #BuildingCommunities #ChildWellBeing #EquityForAll
