About us

Snøhetta is an international integrated architecture and design firm. The practice has a global presence, with offices spanning from Oslo, Paris, and Innsbruck, to New York, San Francisco. Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Adelaide and Melbourne. Snøhetta kick-started its career in 1989 with the competition-winning entry for the new library of Alexandria, Egypt. This was later followed by the commission for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City, among many others. Since its inception, the practice has maintained its original transdisciplinary approach, and integrates architectural, landscape, interior, product, graphic, digital design and art across its projects. The collaborative nature between Snøhetta's different disciplines is an essential driving force of the practice. Snøhetta is currently working on a wide range of international projects, including the Ordrupgaard Art Museum expansion in Denmark and the Shanghai Grand Opera House. Recently completed works include Le Monde Group Headquarters in Paris, Europe’s first underwater restaurant, Under, the redesign of the public space in Times Square, the expansion to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Lascaux IV: The International Centre for Cave Art, Powerhouse Brattørkaia and the design for Norway’s new banknotes. Snøhetta’s working method practices a simultaneous exploration of traditional handicraft and cutting-edge digital technology. At the heart of all Snøhetta’s work lies a commitment to social and environmental sustainability, shaping the built environment and design in the service of humanism. Snøhetta believes well-conceived design can help things run more efficiently, improve people’s well-being and make life more enjoyable. Every project is designed with strong, meaningful concepts in mind – concepts that can translate the ethos of its users and their context.

On Monday, we celebrated the topping off of 50 West 66th Street with an event hosted by Extell. Our team took the construction hoist up to the 66th floor to take in the sweeping 360 degree views of the city. To kick off the celebration, Founding Partner Craig Dykers delivered remarks and brought a ceremonial tree branch to honor generations of building traditions. Congratulations to everyone who has worked on this skyline-marking project!

From Milan to...Melbourne! This year we will be holding a one-off event as part of Melbourne Design Week at our newly opened Melbourne Studio on May 25. Across our Snøhetta studios globally, the simple everyday table is a space which facilitates not only shared lunches, but collaboration, the dissolution of hierarchies and disciplines, and an alignment of ambition. For Melbourne Design Week 2024, we wanted to go back to these basics. We didn’t choose to set out to design another object, but rather to understand the true essence of what a simple object, such as a table, could represent. Through doing this, we were also able to platform critical questions not just facing the design world, but the world today: How do we come together, and why? What does it truly mean to have ‘a seat at the table’? Who gets one and why? We are looking forward to sharing some of our behind the scenes process work and experimentation on the ways we think, design and collaborate. Building on a longstanding successful history of working together, Snøhetta is thrilled to reveal that we have been chosen by Hydro to transform the company's new headquarters and workplace for 750 employees. The corporate head office of Hydro is located at Vækerø in Oslo. By moving out of their current location, but only across the street, Hydro can develop a workplace for the future, but at the same time stay where they have been located for over 40 years. The new office will be transformed with completely new solutions that facilitate new ways of working, yet with aims to reduce the CO2 footprint by reusing existing building elements, identifying optimal solutions for preservation, and material reuse from any demolished structures. Today, Martina Maier, architect and sustainability specialist at our Innsbruck Studio, will take part in the panel discussion “New Modes IV / New Relations with Nature” at “Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum” in Munich. She will introduce Snøhetta’s approach to design with a focus on sustainability at various scales, from object and product design to architecture and urbanism. With the other panellists she will discuss how new relations with nature can create new perspectives for design and generate a new responsibility towards nature (in German). The image shows Snøhetta´s winning design for a new institute building for the University Campus Klagenfurt, Austria, which has the potential to achieve a balanced C02 footprint over his life cycle. Snøhetta’s competition proposal for the Shanghai Industrial Museum stands as a testament to the city's rich industrial heritage, showcasing the spirit of innovation and progress. Inspired by the concept of "Engine," the architectural design embodies the power, precision, and dynamism of this vital machine. The dynamic environment fosters creativity, pushing the boundaries of both design and engineering. The sweeping roof is the museum's unifying element, and it's long spanning modular structure is inhabitable – facilitating flexible and responsive interior planning. Underneath, a grand atrium serves as the heart; connecting the exhibition journey like an intricate network of a machine. 📷by: Mir, Proloog #snøhetta #snohetta #architecture #museum #shanghai

If you are in Berlin tomorrow, make sure to stop by Aedes Architecture Forum and visit the event in the context of the “Wood's Up! – The Rise of Timber Construction” exhibition. Our timber office building for ASI Reisen in Natters near Innsbruck is part of this exhibition which focuses on the renaissance of wood in the construction industry. It presents 16 timber projects by various offices. Tomorrow evening, Aedes invites to a guided exhibition tour and a round table with representatives of the exhibiting offices (in German). Carsten Göhler, architect in our Innsbruck Studio, will take part in the panel about timber as construction material, life cycle, circularity, and energy efficiency. The exhibition runs until May 22. This weekend traditional orchards will once again be celebrated and highlighted, starting with the European Orchard Day on Friday. These special places play an important role in rural landscapes. Celebrating the orchard season, we are delighted to share a few impressions of one such special place of meadows and trees that we have designed for Wattens, Austria, by weaving this traditional element of cultural landscapes in with the typology of a public park. As a traditional method of fruit production, orchards increase the ecological value of rural landscapes, creating habitats for endangered insects, bird species and small mammals. Today, Jette Cathrin Hopp, Snøhetta Director of Acquisition & Business Development in Europe, will be part of the jury of this years 120 Hours Competition - the world's largest architectural competition for students, by students. 120 Hours is a global platform and student competition dedicated to showcasing the diverse voices of students worldwide, across geographical, economic, and cultural boundaries. In this year's challenge, 120 Hours explores the theme of architecture competitions, with a specific focus on a competition situation quite different from their own. Students across the globe were invited to propose spectacular designs for a new National Art Museum of Andorra, all within 120 hours. The task has been created as a result of a collaboration with the creators of the esteemed documentary “The Competition”, which follows the process of the 2008 competition where five of the world’s most famous architects were exclusively invited to propose spectacular designs for a new National Art Museum of Andorra.
