Roskilde University is a state university founded in 1972 with the objective of providing research and education at the highest level in the fields of natural science, social science and the humanities.

These activities at Roskilde University are organised in six departments; degrees are offered in a wide range of subjects at Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. levels.

Many study programmes are now being offered in English at both undergraduate and graduate levels, thus creating an exciting and inspiring study environment for both Danish students and students coming from abroad.

The Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as associate professor of urban development and planning from September 21st or as soon as possible thereafter. The associate professor is expected to teach and do research in contemporary social, democratic and environmental challenges for cities and local communities and in responses from planning agencies. The research work will include planning theory, analysis of planning practices and participatory and experimental methodologies.

The Department of People and Technology is involved in development of sustainable solutions. We use experimental approaches and support people’s active commitment. Research in sustainable urban design and planning is central to the department’s research strategy and the associate professor should be able to do research and teach in planning and sustainability-related subjects within the departments urban planning and design-related study programs. The position in urban development and planning is primarily associated with the research group Space, Place, Mobility and Urban Studies (MOSPUS).

The assistant professor’s work will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination work) and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations). In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. Furthermore, the associate professor is expected to manage research, provide guidance and supervision of assistant professors and researchers as well as take part in academic assessments. It will be an advantage if the applicant can contribute to the strengthening of the ties between RUC’s bachelor program in Humanities and Technology and the master programs in Planning Studies (Plan, By & Proces) and Nordic Urban Planning Studies.

• Contribute to the development of the research profile of the department
• Contribute to boost the international recognition of the research at the Department
• Engage in external fundraising to increase funds for the Department
• Play a role in developing the educational programs of the Department
• Teach at both BA and MA level
• Act as an mentor for junior researchers
• Contribute to the administrative responsibilities of the Department
• Participate in the Department’s communication with the broader public
• Take responsibility for the long-term well-being of the Department and RUC at large
• Actively contribute to the research environment by a visible and physical presence at IMT
• Promote RUC’s academic reputation

• Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within planning studies and be able to document publication at an international level. Qualifications within several of the following scientific areas are required qualifications:
• Documented scientific qualifications such as an assistant professor or equivalent in relation to planning research and urban studies.
• Specialist background within urban planning, and participatory methods
• Ability to contribute to the department’s interdisciplinary, socially engaged and experimental research and teaching profile
• Experience with teaching in problem-oriented project learning (PPL) or similar teaching methodologies at university level.
• Initiative and good collaboration skills engaging in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities.
