PHNX is a Berlin based CoLiving brand catrering to millennials studying or living abroad. All of our accommodations offer all-inclusive rents, which comprise fast internet, fully equipped apartments down to the bed sheet and towel. All you need to bring is yourself and your personal belongings and you are good to go. Each property has an onsite community manager who will help residents to settle in. There is a very strong focus on creating a community with weekly events. Each location has it’s own restaurant/bar area as well as coworking space.

The Covid-19 pandemic has resurfaced new trends in accommodation-related habits. At ThinkYoung and PHNX we believe that these transformations are just the tip of the iceberg in a series of developments which are shaping living habits and that actually precede the pandemic. The position in question seeks to learn more about these trends. With this in mind, the post holder will have the chance to leverage on current expertise on understanding young people’s preferences while joining a professional environment focusing on housing and modern living situations. This will be geared towards the development of research findings to be presented in a series of webinars to showcase current and future trends amongst youth and Gen Z.

The areas covered will be inter alia:

• Student Housing - Housing for Interns and Young Professionals - Co-living and the Sharing of Living Spaces - Hotel and Hostel Use - Co-working and Study Spaces - Remote Work and Future Office Spaces - Real Estate

We are looking for a Junior Researcher to contribute to this endeavor, and to develop a rigorous understanding and presentation of youth experiences, attitudes, and preferences on the above topics. The above list is non exhaustive, and acts as a guide for further concept development and analysis.

• The junior researcher will prepare an ensemble of thoroughly researched presentations on young people’s accommodation preferences to be presented in a series of webinars
• The researcher should use reputable sources for their work. These include articles published in peer-reviewed journals, books written by scholars, and reports elaborated by public institutions or thinktanks. Blogposts and opinion articles written by scholars may also be included
• The researcher will find, access, and analyze trends present in open source and available online data focusing on youth related issues, and their relationship with housing, accommodation, co-living, and social and workspaces.
• A list of sources will be provided by the team as suggestions for a starting point
• Her/his work will be supported and reviewed by the team
• The researcher will reside in Hamburg. * Possibility to offer an accomodation at the Hamburg residence can be considered

• A completed university degree (BA, BSc, licence or equivalent)
• At least 4 years of higher education in economics, sociology, political science, urban studies, business administration, anthropology (or any other related field)
• Outstanding academic track record
• Proven interest in social science research
• Familiarity with varying research methods
• Quantitative: primary and secondary data analysis (understanding and ability to apply statistical tests, familiarity with varying data analysis tools (SPSS/R, etc.)
• Qualitative: desk research, literature reviews, online and open source research
• Languages: English (C1 or above), German (C1 or above)
• IT skills: MS PowerPoint and MS Excel

Additional qualifications and skills (not requirements but will be considered a plus):

• Experience conducting social science research (through internships, apprenticeships or previous jobs)
• Proven track record and competence in article, blog, or report writing.
• Proven interest in youth and/or housing issues
• Previous attendance to research conferences/and or seminars on the social sciences
