About the Role

THE POSITION:

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing city with many development opportunities on the horizon and to lead and develop both experienced professionals and new talent.

The Planning Manager is a single position management level classification that has responsibility of planning and directing current and future planning projects for the Community Development Department as well as the responsibility and authority to perform all functions described by the California Government Code. The incumbent exercises a high level of discretion, initiative, and independent judgment in performing the full range of routine to complex job duties within the classification specifications. Additionally, it is responsible for coordinating planning services with other divisions, City departments, and outside agencies and organizations. It provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Director and Deputy Director of Community Development. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff

UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES:

In addition to overseeing the planning and directing of current and advance planning projects for the Community Development Department, the Planning Manager will be integral in a recently launched comprehensive update to the City’s Zoning Ordinance and will also be integral in the implementation of a series of recommendations from a consultant-prepared organizational assessment of the Community Development Department. These recommendations include, but are not limited to, making better use of existing and new technology and re-evaluating current practices to achieve greater efficiency, productivity and streamlining, establishing and enhancing the ability for customers to access information more easily and quickly on the City’s website and other platforms, and determining how to best utilize contracted support services.

About You

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in planning, public or business administration, or a related field;

AND

Five (5) years of responsible, professional urban planning experience, including at least two (2) years providing direction or supervision to professional staff.

Possession of a Master’s degree in either city planning or public administration with emphasis in city planning is highly desirable.

Degrees received outside of the United States require a foreign degree equivalency certification.

Proof of legal right to work in the United States.
