About Us

The University of Manchester is part of the prestigious Russell Group of universities, with outstanding facilities and the widest range of courses. We are highly respected across the globe as a centre of teaching excellence and innovative research.

About the Role

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work on a major three-year Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) study of how digital platforms are reshaping urban mobility systems.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr Mike Hodson and Professor Andrew McMeekin. They will be a member of the Sustainable Consumption Institute (SCI), a research institute in the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) and the School of Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities.

Drawing on insights from urban studies and innovation studies, the project will critically examine the extent to which combinations of digital mobility platforms (for example, ride-hailing, bike-sharing, mapping, payment and other platforms) mitigate or exacerbate contemporary economic, ecological and social challenges at urban scale.

The successful applicant will utilise a variety of methods, including documentary analysis, programmes of semi-structured interviews in the UK and with representatives of international organisations, and in-depth case studies with three metropolitan transport authorities in England. They will contribute to a range of research, knowledge exchange and project management activities

The post will last for 3 years commencing December 2020.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
