In many ways, WeWork is a unique experiment: over 200,000 people working together in more than 200 buildings. We want to understand how these environments influence people so that we can identify successful design patterns that improve people’s happiness, productivity, and sense of community.

As a senior member of the applied science team, you’ll be responsible for conducting research that furthers our understanding of how space influences people. Some of the questions that we anticipate you’ll answer include:

• How do we evaluate and decide between two alternative spatial layouts?
• How do physical attributes of our buildings (such as the size of windows) influence people’s perception of the overall design?
• Do meeting room bookings tell us something about an individual’s wellbeing or a company’s performance?

As a scientist at WeWork you will have access to large study population of people working in some of the world’s most innovative offices. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with architects, data scientists, usability researchers, and other members of the applied science team. The research that you produce will directly influence design and management decisions at WeWork that will in turn help make thousands of people happier, more productive, and more connected to their communities.

• Developing a long-term research agenda focused on the design of the workplace.
• Managing and mentoring junior researchers.
• Executing research projects end-to-end, including study design, data gathering, analysis, and communication.
• Publishing and presenting research both internally and externally.

• PhD (or a masters with equivalent experience) in Environmental Psychology, Design, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Science, or other related research discipline.
• Experience conducting research that investigates how environments impact people (for example, research into place attachment and identity, workplace strategy, or research that examines the impact of interior design, architecture, urban planning, or industrial design).
• Experience or strong interest in work habits and workplace design.
• 5+ years industry experience
• Proficiency in qualitative research methodologies such as interviews, focus groups, diary studies, observations, and other relevant qualitative or user experience methods.
• Proficiency in quantitative research methods, particularly survey design and inferential statistics.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Available to work in New York, NY.
