This is the future that European cities have been working to build through Eurocities since 1986. We help cities inspire each other. When a crisis hits, the urgency of local coordination and information sharing is starkly obvious – but with longer-burning issues like climate change, social equality and a vibrant economy this ‘glocal’ approach is no less essential.

That’s why we work with over 200 of Europe’s largest cities to improve the lives of over 130 million residents across 38 countries. That’s the ‘cities’ part of ‘Eurocities’. Hundreds of cities have already committed to getting carbon emissions down to zero, welcoming migrants and refugees, and governing through dialogue with their residents.

Local governments work on the ground with citizens and residents, and are essential partners for turning EU policies and ambitions into reality. As such, cities must be included directly in European decision making and should be in direct receipt of European funds. That’s the ‘Euro’ part of ‘Eurocities.’ So Eurocities, Europe plus cities, equals a better future for all.

About the Role

Eurocities is the network of major European cities, comprising more than 200 members, working across a wide range of thematic areas that reflect cities’ priorities.

We are recruiting a trainee to work on topics linked to economic development, to become a member of the economic development team for six months initially, renewable for another 6 months, ideally starting in March 2023.

What You're Gonna Do

As trainee, you will play an important role in Eurocities’ daily work, with a focus on topics linked to economic development. You will work with the Team coordinator, covering topics such as the review of EU economic governance, local financing for the just transition, innovation and local ecosystems, local regeneration strategies, skills, and more. In this role, you will:

monitor policy initiatives and developments at the EU level on topics such as strategies of urban and regional development, spatial economics, innovation & entrepreneurship, finance & long-term investments, institutions & international economic relations and public services
carry out research, analysing policy documents
analyse policy documents and draft briefing notes
draft articles for Eurocities newsletter, update Eurocities web pages and other communications-related tasks
contribute to the organisation of the forum and working group meetings, both online and onsite
update members database
give general support to the economic development team
support the implementation of EU funded projects

About You

You are proactive and enthusiastic about delivering positive results in a flexible manner.

Eurocities will support you in developing your skills for entering the workplace. We have set out below some skills that would help you get the most out of this traineeship.

You have:

a university degree, preferably linked to economic & regional development issues
basic knowledge and interest in local & regional economic development trends in the European Union
basic knowledge about economic development policies in the EU, the EU institutions and the role of local authorities
a keen interest in economic policies
excellent oral and written communications skills in English other languages is an asset
advanced writing skills
excellent organisational skills
problem-solving approach
good interpersonal skills for an international environment
experience with Microsoft Teams
digital awareness for online meetings
You are:

a dynamic team player
able to work independently
agile in a changing environment with the ability to juggle competing deadlines

What We Offer

We offer
a six-month traineeship contract, starting in March 2023, renewable for another 6 months;
a full-time position that will be carried out at Eurocities office in Brussels;
a remuneration of approximately €1,000 per month.
Important: Eurocities will provide you with a Belgian trainee contract (CIP “convention d’immersion professionnelle”). Due to the CIP requirements and conditions, the selected candidate will need to either live in Belgium or be willing to move to Belgium for the duration of the contract (candidates need to provide a Belgian address).
