Project for Public Spaces (PPS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people create and sustain public spaces that build strong communities. We are the central hub of the global placemaking movement, connecting people to ideas, resources, expertise, and partners who see place as the key to addressing our greatest challenges.
Project for Public Spaces seeks an intern to join our transportation program team. Transportation continues to claim the largest geographic share of public spaces in our cities, and therefore plays a critical role in shaping our communities and people’s lives. When streets and public transportation systems are well-designed, they do much more than help people get around efficiently—they connect people to each other, enhance upward mobility, create special public places, help foster active and healthy lifestyles, boost economic development, and highlight local culture and assets. Through this program, Project for Public Spaces provides communities with the resources and expertise they need to create great streets, transit hubs, and transportation networks.
The Transportation Intern will support the Program Manager on developing the Portals to Places Initiative, focused on the public spaces and districts surrounding transit stops and stations.
This internship is part of the transportation program team and reports directly to the Program Manager. The Program Manager will schedule weekly check-ins with the intern to review their work plan and track progress. The intern will also work closely with our communications team responsible for all online content.
To be eligible, the applicant must commit to working for a minimum of 20 hours per week for four months beginning in January 2020. The position may be extended depending on available funding.
The position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent communication (written and verbal), research, and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. Candidates should have a strong interest in urban planning, transportation, public administration, and/or placemaking as demonstrated by work or academic endeavors.
Prior experience addressing pressing urban social issues, including but not limited to gender, equity, and diversity, is highly desirable.
High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, Keynote, Google suite, web based data and information platforms is required for this position. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud is desirable but not mandatory.
