About the Programme

Urban experience design studio for Cities will host "for Cities Week 2025: Chiang Mai" in Chiang Mai, Thailand this May. It will bring together urbanists from around the world for local research and collaborative exhibition creation.

We are now accepting applications for participants in this program that combines field research, networking with local urbanists and creative hubs, and planning/design outputs

◉Theme ”’Tropical’ Urbanism(s)”
As cities worldwide experience increasing tropicalization due to climate change, how can we foster comfortable and sustainable urban living? Drawing from Thailand’s traditional wisdom and everyday practices, we will explore new possibilities for urban design and ways of understanding cities.
We would also like to critically rethink the meaning of “tropical,” beyond its colonial association, towards a pluralistic, adaptive, and community-driven approach to cities.

◉Program
We offer two types of participation. Participants can enter/exit the venue at their convenience.

A) Fellowship: May 26- June 1 (Full Period)
This is the basic plan for participating throughout the entire week. In the first half, we will immerse ourselves in the local community through field research, workshops, and site visits related to the theme "'Tropical' Urbanism(s)". In the latter half, we will analyze our findings, create exhibitions, and present them to the audience and local community.

B) Participants: May 30, May 31, June 1 (Last 3 Days of the program)
We will hold various forum-style sessions with urbanists from Japan and abroad. We plan to hold exhibitions, talk sessions, and kids' workshops. You can participate in just this period if you prefer.

About Us

for Cities is an international collective of urban practitioners and thinkers working in Asian cities. We provide an urban "repository" — an online idea bank — where emerging practitioners in the field of urbanism (architects, urban planners, civil activists, policymakers, researchers, artists, journalists, and more) can showcase their practices and ideas. From our repository, people can find inspiration, useful tools, happenings related to architecture and urbanism, and even future collaborators for their local projects. We select the finest ideas from the platform and introduce them to established, high-profile companies as well as local goverments and other related institutions who are looking for new inspiration in their projects and new practitioners to help them achieve their goals. We also host an annual city festival & exhibition in multiple Asian cities to share, test, and learn from these ideas.
