About the Programme

In our series of DIY workshops, we will now be looking into the centuries old but very now tradition of Vyshyvanka, the famous embroidery technique from Ukraine. Apart from telling stories and being connected to different regions, a Vyshyvanka is believed to be a talisman, bringing luck and protection to the person wearing the garment. Especially now, the shops that are selling Vyshyvanka's are busy, selling clothing that gives people strength. The embroiderers have presently shifted to ‘embroidering’ camouflage nets to protect Ukrainian soldiers. During the Vyshyvanka workshop led by Bogdana Postrygan, the cultural language, and meanings of Vyshyvanka are introduced and explained, and different stitches and colours are tried out in an individual sampler. Then a collective design is made that will apply the language of Vyshyvanka to a camouflage net and thus raise the tradition to a form of resistance.

About Us

The Independent School for the City is a playground for all urban thinkers, do-ers and designers – based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It brings together critical and experimental ideas in the field of urban research, design, strategy and activism. Through a range of diverse activities, it offers a platform where urban professionals can meet to informally discuss the challenges facing the modern city.

The school is an initiative of Crimson Historians and Urbanists and ZUS and is rooted in their practices of combining a critical and activist approach to the city with effecting real change through architectural and planning projects. The independent school for the City is founded on a strong belief in an incremental instead of a tabula rasa approach to city planning which blurs the lines between critique and practice on the one hand, and research and policy on the other.
