Policy Advisor – Maternity Cover

Eurocities, the network of major European cities, is recruiting a policy advisor to work in the field of environment and energy. The candidate would start mid-September 2022.

Responsibilities

As policy advisor, you will coordinate the network’s activities related to European Green Deal, environment policies, including circular economy, waste management, water as well as contributing to the ongoing work on climate policies. You will work under the supervision of the Executive Director at the Eurocities Brussels office. Tasks include:

  • taking the lead on the development and implementation of Eurocities’ advocacy strategy in these fields, including for the European Green Deal
  • maintaining an up-to-date overview of policy developments in the above mentioned fields and contributing with expertise and strategic insights to the policy work of Eurocities
  • maintaining contacts with the EU institutions, with member cities, and with other stakeholders
  • coordinating the preparation of relevant policy statements advising management on forthcoming environmental and climate priorities, anticipating in policy challenges and opportunities and mobilising members accordingly
  • coordinating, supporting and providing content-related inputs to the Eurocities environment forum
  • supporting the working groups related to the environment forum
  • cooperating with other Eurocities Forums and projects in cross-cutting areas, such as jobs and skills, digital transition, public procurement, etc.
  • ensuring that any potential synergies with other policy areas, projects and communications activities of Eurocities are developed through coordination with relevant colleagues
  • ensuring effective communication to members and more widely through the various channels available
  • supporting Eurocities general policy and project work, as well as other activities in line with the overall objectives

 

Profile

You are an experienced professional who is full of initiative, self-driven, curious, creative, flexible and results-oriented. The skills and experience to do this job successfully include*:

  • a successful track record of at least 5 years of work experience in policy advocacy at EU level
  • a Masters degree or equivalent in, urban development, EU studies or related fields
  • thorough understanding of the EU institutions, decision making processes and funding instruments
  • excellent knowledge of urban policies and cities in general, including the role of cities in the EU
  • excellent research and analytical skills, including the ability to collect, analyse and present information in a clear and concise way
  • experience in mutual learning/policy transfer methodologies
  • excellent political judgement for advocacy and lobby work
  • experience in organising events and mutual learning activities
  • experience in coordinating working groups
  • experience in advocacy, lobby and influencing EU institutions and other relevant stakeholders
  • strong organisation and coordination skills
  • excellent organisational awareness
  • excellent oral and written communications skills in English
  • good interpersonal skills for an international environment

 

Assets:

  • experience of working with local/city governments or public sector partners
  • experience of implementing EU funded projects
  • good command of French
  • other languages

We offer

  • A full-time employment position, under Belgian legislation.

The selected candidate will need to either live in Belgium or be willing to move to Belgium for the duration of the contract (candidates need to provide a Belgian address).

  • A maternity replacement contract until mid-April
  • €3,200 – €3,600 monthly gross salary, according to profile and experience
