Did you read your local #WalkingCyclingIndex report and wonder what the UK-wide data was? Look no further - we have now published our report that aggregates data from across the UK. 💡 Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index, the largest independent survey of active travel in the UK, has revealed that a majority (56%) of people want to shift investment in road building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚲 The report also shows greater public demand for active travel over driving, with 50% wanting to walk more and 43% wanting to cycle more. A third of people want to make greater use of public transport. #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking Read all about it here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebN_u23T

About us
We work for and with communities, helping them come to life by walking, wheeling and cycling to create healthier places and happier lives for everyone. Across the UK we involve communities in shaping our towns and cities. Together we campaign for and create spaces where everyone can move around safely and give people the tools and confidence to get out of their cars. We inspire people to change the way we all travel every day, forging closer connections with our neighbours and reducing traffic to create a better environment and more sustainable society for everyone. Flooding is going to be one of the biggest challenges the National Cycle Network faces as extreme weather becomes more common. It was great to meet Wera Hobhouse to discuss fixes we've been working on with Bath & North East Somerset Council so everyone can use the Devonshire Tunnel whatever the weather. ☀ 🌧 🍃 #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking

In 2021, our Walking and Cycling Index found that 70% of residents on a low income would find access to a cycle useful to start cycling. 🚲 While people on a low income are less likely to be able to afford the cost of a new cycle, it's not just cost that has been found to put people off getting a cycle. Thanks to support from Cyclehoop, Sustrans is delivering research to better understand home cycle storage for people on a low income or not in employment across the UK. Find out more 👇

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, we're sharing Nathan's story on how he discovered the mental health benefits of cycling for the first time and how he later shared this with someone else. 💚 "It was kind of crazy to me because as a child I’d cycled for fun, but that was the first time I’d cycled for therapy." Nathan also speaks about the reality of health inequalities between communities and the importance of promoting cycling for wellbeing among underrepresented groups. 💬 Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/euSyRyFh #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MomentsForMovement #ActiveTravel #Cycling #MentalHealth

We're supporting Hounslow Travel Active with the All-Ability Cycling Hub, Inwood Park. Thanks to London Marathon Foundation, there's a newly expanded range of inclusive and non-standard cycles for Hounslow residents with physical and learning disabilities. It was brilliant to see residents turn out to give the new bikes a spin back and children took turns on a smoothie making bike. Despite it being a drizzly day, everyone agreed that all ability cycling is a great way to open up peddle power to all. 🎦 Read and watch more below:

The Government’s Cycle to Work scheme has helped two million people access a cycle. Four-in-five participants say they cycle every week, up from the just two-in-five before joining. It’s pretty safe to say the scheme is successful. Find out more about how Sustrans is delivering vital research to help make the case that people on a low income or not in employment should be given financial support to access a cycle, generously funded by the Financial Fairness Trust.

All children need a safe route to school. A number of roads are being closed around four schools in Frome in an effort to make the school run safer. The move is part of a trial being run by the Frome Safer School Streets project - the first Somerset town where safer school streets are being trialled. 👏 The #SchoolStreets initiative closes roads outside schools at peak times to improve air quality and encourage active travel. 💬 "This is a time when we are being encouraged to get more exercise. Cycling, wheeling, and walking are fantastic form of exercise, recreation, and means of transport. I believe making these paths accessible for families and disabled people is vitally important for health, well-being, and the environment." Meet Debbie 👋 Debbie discovered recumbent trikes as a means of helping manage her health conditions and enabling her to enjoy exploring through cycling. Despite the positives of her recumbent trike, access barriers mean that she and others often can’t go where others can. Read Debbie's story below 👇

We’re excited to announce that Sustrans has been shortlisted for not one but two awards in the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Awards. 🏆 We’ve been shortlisted for the CIHT Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award for our Transport to Thrive project and the CIHT Research Award for our Disabled Citizens Inquiry (DCI). For our Transport to Thrive project, we teamed up with University of the West of England (UWE) to address the transport barriers that young people aged 16 to 24 face when accessing key life opportunities. As part of our Disabled Citizens Inquiry, we partnered with Transport for All to share research and recommendations to help decision-makers put the views and ideas of disabled people at the heart of policy, investment and practice for walking and wheeling. 👩🏾🦽 A huge thanks to our funders Motability Foundation for our DCI project and The Health Foundation for our Transport to Thrive project.
