A slowdown in traditional lab development and shifts in federal research funding are pushing architects to rethink the future of R&D spaces. Today’s labs are evolving beyond rows of benches and test tubes into versatile environments that support advanced manufacturing, innovative research, and groundbreaking discoveries. “Everyone talks about designing facilities that are flexible and adaptable,” says Ed Cordes, AIA, leader of our science and technology practice. “There is no better example of it than right now, and designing some of these speculative lab buildings. The spaces will be different in the next ten years than they’ve been in the past ten years.” Thanks, Patrick Sisson, for the coverage in The Architect's Newspaper: https://lnkd.in/gh8RpXuJ #labdesign #lifesciences #scienceandtechnology

We’re excited to announce that four of our projects have been recognized in the 2024 World Architecture News (WAN) Awards! 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐊𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝘎𝘰𝘭𝘥: 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 – 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 Designed as the first all-mass timber, net-zero energy, and carbon engineering teaching and research facility in the U.S., this new facility features an elevated bridge that connects the new building to an adjacent structure, creating a multi-disciplinary learning environment and carefully preserving natural wildlife corridors. 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐨 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘻𝘦: 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 – 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 This building offers a fresh take on residential design in São Paulo through the concept of kinetic architecture. Inspired by Brazilian artist Abraham Palatnik, its appearance shifts depending on the observer's perspective and the time of day, creating a dynamic structure that responds to its environment. 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐒𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐬 & 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘻𝘦: 𝘈𝘥𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘦 – 𝘉𝘪𝘨 Outpatient care is redefined in this innovative project by repurposing a former Sears store at the Marketplace Mall in Rochester, New York. The new facility consolidates essential orthopedic services in one location, addressing the region’s growing demand for specialized care. 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞, 𝐑𝐨𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐕𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘻𝘦: 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 – 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 This project transforms a 1960s modernist building into a vibrant campus hub for scientific collaboration, innovation, and community engagement. It also supports the college’s transition to carbon neutrality, powering other buildings while advancing Barnard’s sustainability goals.

Even more so than with other public projects, obtaining community input is an essential step in designing a community center. This was complicated in our work on the Oak Park Community Center as the start of the project coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Making lemonade of these lemons, we pivoted from in-person group meetings to a virtual format, which ultimately allowed more people to participate. Their perspectives were invaluable in pushing us toward progressive solutions, like inclusive bath and locker rooms, the integration of mental health services in the building, and a more transparent connection to the street, not to mention a high-performance design that achieves net zero energy use. In this installment of #TheFold, we invite you to the conversations that led to this best-in-class community center. Learn more about the project on Instagram (@perkinswill) and our website: https://lnkd.in/dCmE3MAu 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 ‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗱’?: A periodical social media series documenting the processes behind our award-winning designs. Each post presents a focused look at the steps our teams take when thinking through design problems on behalf of our clients, going beyond finished photography to reveal the research, sketches, diagrams, models, mockups, and designer perspectives that go into translating ideas into realities. Whether it’s articulating a facade to complement its urban context or peeling back the layers of history to reveal the cultural capital of an existing building, The Fold shows you our projects like you’ve never seen them before.

You’ve never seen an ICU like this before! For Renown Health, we designed a new pediatric and neonatal ICU that's both highly efficient and emotionally restorative, creating a space where young patients and their families feel supported at every stage of their healing journey. The unit features custom art inspired by Reno’s vibrant community and natural landscapes, softening the clinical atmosphere of intensive care while celebrating the region’s unique spirit. From the elevator lobby, young patients are guided through playful meadows and a starlit campground reminiscent of Lake Tahoe, offering comfort and a mental escape. "When families come to us, they’re going through one of the most difficult times in their lives," says Kristen Cleveland-Ceballos, Renown Manager of Nursing. "This new NICU/PICU means so much for those families because it provides an uplifting environment with plenty of privacy and the best technology available. The spaces allow families to focus on their kids while we focus on helping them get better." This thoughtful redesign reflects the expertise and commitment of Planning Principal Ashley Dias, AIA, ACHE, Interior Design Project Manager Nicki Hellem, and Interior Designer Holly Ewing.
