The CIVITAS Initiative works to make sustainable and smart urban mobility a reality for all in Europe and beyond.
About us
CIVITAS is one of the flagship programmes helping the European Commission achieve its ambitious mobility and transport goals, and in turn those in the European Green Deal. It does this by acting as a network of cities, for cities, dedicated to sustainable urban mobility. Through peer exchange, networking and training, CIVITAS fosters political commitment and boosts collective expertise, equipping cities to put mobility at the centre of decarbonisation. Since its launch in 2002, CIVITAS has advanced research and innovation in sustainable urban mobility and enabled local authorities to develop, test and roll out measures via a range of projects. A series of ten thematic areas underpin these. The need to shift to sustainable urban mobility is clear. Nearly 70% of EU citizens live in urban areas, where the effects of transport-produced greenhouse gas emissions – which account for a quarter of the EU’s total emissions – and noise pollution are felt most severely. These, alongside widespread congestion, are damaging quality of life and health. CIVITAS supports cities to make smart and sustainable urban mobility a reality for all. In doing so, it is ensuring that mobility is a driving force behind the creation of climate-neutral and resilient cities.

🌱 The CIVITAS consortium has been getting to know Freiburg's eco-district, Vauban, with its unique features contributing to a largely self-sufficient neighbourhood filled with citizen-led initiatives and #sustainable solutions in terms of energy, food, funding, construction, and - of course - #mobility! A few fun facts: - ☢️ Its founding resulted from a bottom-up initiative formed from growing opposition to nuclear plant construction plans in the region in the 70s and 80s. - 🚗 It has an impressively low number of cars - 17 per 100 inhabitants! - 🅿️ The entire area of Vauban (ca. 40 ha) has a speed limit of 30 km/h and no parking spaces along local streets - there is one central parking building where privately-owned cars must be kept. - ⛔ At the end of Vauban there is a "dead-end" for cars, where only pedestrians and cyclists can pass through, preventing transit traffic passing throught the district. There is a tram and a bus line reaching Vauban from two opposite directions, connecting it with the neighbouring areas. 🙏 A big thank you to Peter Schick from Stadt Freiburg for sharing insights into our host city's mobility context and for joining us on the walking tour! And now we're back in the meeting discussing next steps for the CIVITAS Initiative - exciting things are coming!

With the European #CyclingDeclaration laying out 8 key principles to galvanise the uptake of 🚲cycling across the EU – how should #cities, planners and the wider #urbanmobility sector turn CHANGE into effective ACTION? One #mobility expert suggests: “The EU should set specific targets for #CyclingInfrastructure / to make cycling a full mode of transport in practice, and not just in policy,” P. Amaral at the European Cyclists' Federation 👉For more on the full range of responses, check out part 2 of mobility expert insights on the European #CyclingDeclaration https://lnkd.in/ezE-smUp #ActiveTravel #CyclingRevolution
