On this session Maximilian Mauracher from NEW STANDARD.S | Certified B Corp™ will present us the results of the Nudging experiment “Reusables at the point-of-sale in system gastronomy” done by “Mehrweg. Einfach. Machen” – an alliance initiated by ProjectTogether, WWF and Mehrwegverband Deutschland e.V. The experiment shows which nudges can drive the usage of reusable packaging like cups and boxes and which aren’t effective. Max, who realized the documentation of the experiment 'a Playbook for gastronomy owners who want to promote reusables', will share key insights and thoughts on which nudges can be transferred to other areas of consumption to drive circularity. The challenge area “Waste Management” is essential for a #CircularCity. Three solutions were chosen for optimizing the use and processing of organic waste with the involvement of citizens and developing and introducing sustainable alternative packaging to avoid single-use plastic across the board. During the past 2 days the CircularPSP consortium got together in Guimaraes to evaluate proposals from over 10 strong applicants addressing the topic of circular economy and digital service provisions. We had productive discussions with CircularPSP, exploring many interesting ideas involving the use of AI technologies. These ideas show promising approaches to support local municipalities and procurement teams in their journey towards local circular economy transformation. Stay tuned for the announcement of the top 5 proposals, after which intensive cooperation will continue for solution development.

Meet the team: Daniela Raffo Daniela is the newest addition to the Construction Sector team at Circular Berlin. As an architect and urban manager by training, Daniela is passionate about education and using her experience to contribute to the sustainable development of cities and communities. In her role at Circular Berlin, Daniela works primarily on the BuildSkills Academy project (https://lnkd.in/ebQCk8Sh), managing projects in the built environment sector. Regarding the biggest change individuals can make to become more circular, Daniela believes it's about "minimising our demand for things, educating ourselves to fix what is possible or solve problems with what we already have and in the simplest way." She notes that "it is our small habits that can make us change on a larger scale." Daniela is inspired by organizations and projects like Roots Radicals, which she discovered during Circular Berlin's 2023 Circular Connect event. In this presentation, Felipe Schmidt Fonseca will share with the results of his PhD research (Northumbria University / Mozilla Foundation) on “reuse datasets”, a design concept developed during his investigation to help seek alternative circularities through commons-based governance of data relevant for the reuse of products and materials. Despite recent advancements in terms of legislation and industrial practices, a fully closed-loop economy is not yet feasible in the foreseeable future. In such a scenario, recycling won’t be enough to cope with the growing volume of goods being manufactured every day, in the whole world. Felipe's PhD research explored convivial approaches to create socially inclusive local systems of waste prevention that help divert potentially reusable materials from the waste stream. Have you heard of the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO)? Europe is currently facing a significant shortage of skilled construction workers, which is critical to meeting our decarbonisation targets and other environmental goals. To address this, one of the strategies included in the Europe 2020 initiative is the implementation of a multilingual classification system known as ESCO. This framework aims to standardise the way skills and job opportunities are communicated across Europe, improve the match between job seekers' skills and market needs, and bridge the gap between the labour market and educational systems. In our Build Skills Academy project, we used the ESCO database to specifically identify the green and digital skills, knowledge and competences needed in the construction industry, and matched these to the five key topical areas we identified as top priorities for the future of sustainable construction. This process allowed us to identify both existing competencies and those that are needed but not yet included in the database. We categorised these missing elements as new skills and knowledge. This outcome represents a promising first step in leveraging the current ESCO skills database, which currently lacks predictive capabilities. Improving the relevance and applicability of the database will allow it to better meet the evolving needs of the construction sector, particularly in the context of green and digital transformation. This improvement will also support the evolution of construction education and prepare it for future challenges.
