About us
The World Bank is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the world. Our vision is to create a world without poverty on a livable planet. We are not a bank in the common sense; we are made up of two unique development institutions owned by 189 member countries: the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA). Each institution plays a different but collaborative role in advancing the vision of inclusive and sustainable globalization. The IBRD aims to reduce poverty in middle-income and creditworthy poorer countries, while IDA focuses on the world's poorest countries. Their work is complemented by that of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Together, we provide low-interest loans, interest-free credits and grants to developing countries for a wide array of purposes that include investments in education, health, public administration, infrastructure, financial and private sector development, agriculture and environmental and natural resource management.

The World Bank reposted this
For around a year now, we’ve been campaigning on global finance reform - joining the growing chorus of voices, spearheaded often by Barbados PM Mia Mottley, calling for a fairer and more ambitious system to deliver finance to where it is most needed. Most recently, we published an open letter addressed to G20 leaders, calling on them to, among other things, triple investment into development banks. This journey has led us to something called IDA. The International Development Association (IDA) is the World Bank’s people and planet fund for those most in need, delivering cheap loans and grants to the least developed economies. This kind of affordable, long-term finance is a vital tool in tackling the polycrisis and will be integral to achieving the Global Goals. As well as supporting countries respond to crises, IDA funding can serve as the bedrock for sustainable economic growth. The fund is mostly made up of contributions from wealthier countries and is topped up or ‘replenished’ every three years. However, as purse strings tighten around the world, there is concern this year’s replenishment may not meet the moment. Last week, African leaders gathered in Nairobi to discuss their priorities for IDA and the impact of the fund on their continent. Their statements are a great reminder of the importance of IDA, and why it is a win-win for people and planet. Find out more about what the leaders had to say: https://lnkd.in/esdYPepK
