Creating socially and environmentally sustainable cities and communities
About us
UN-Habitat is the United Nations entity responsible for developing urban policies and translating them into action to create sustainable cities and communities. Cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, and social challenges. There has been a phenomenal shift towards urbanization, with half of the world's population living in cities. By 2050, almost 70 per cent of the population will reside in cities. This urban growth will be happening mainly in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. In the absence of effective urban planning, the consequences of this rapid urbanization will be dramatic. Urban policies need to change to turn this rapid urban growth into opportunities to create a better quality of life for people. UN-Habitat is at the helm of this change. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to address the issues of urban growth and sustainable urban development.

The Summit of the Future will bring together high-level leaders globally to establish an international consensus on bettering our present and safeguarding our future. It presents a pivotal moment for leaders to make groundbreaking decisions addressing some of the most significant global challenges of our time. While numerous agreements and pledges, such as the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, outline the "what," the Summit of the Future focuses on the "how." How can we improve collaboration to achieve our goals? How can we better address present needs while also preparing for future challenges? The Summit will seek to unleash the power of cooperation to fulfill these aspirations and objectives. See what’s on the agenda for this crucial opportunity to shape #OurCommonFuture. https://bit.ly/SotF2024

London's black cabs are going green! Since its launch in 2018 the TX electric cab has prevented more than 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the earth's atmosphere. That’s the equivalent to the emissions of more than 111,000 passenger flights from London to Sydney. It has now overtaken the diesel-powered TX4 as the most common black cab operating in London. And it's not happening just London. In the last six years, London EV Company (LEVC)'s TX has travelled more than 650 million miles globally, with the company producing more than 10,000 of its electric TX taxis, which have been sold throughout the world. The upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future, slated for this September, offers a crucial opportunity for world leaders, particularly those from Africa, to contemplate how the continent can adapt its policies to address the evolving landscape of #urbanization and its associated challenges. The Acting Executive Director of UN-Habitat Michal Mlynár emphasizes that our future is urban. "We need to find climate solutions that are not doubling down on or perpetuating deeply entrenched injustice and human rights abuses in pursuing solutions that don't actually go to the root of the crisis. [...] How do we redesign our cities? If we made our cities less car friendly, they'd be greener. Imagine if we used all of that parking space to create local food systems, to build playgrounds, to make cities more resilient." - Well said Clover Hogan 🏞
The most insidious form of climate denial is no longer, "It's not happening," but the belief that incremental or technological solutions will solve this crisis. Take electric vehicles. As demand grows each year, so does the need for cobalt; 70% of which is mined in the DRC. This has led to an explosion in human rights abuses; from child labour, to miners being buried alive when tunnels cave in. Workers make as little as £2 per day (meanwhile, the EV market was valued at £388+ billion last year). In the pursuit of shiny, silver bullet solutions, we are inadvertently doubling down on deeply-entrenched injustices. What if we zoomed out from the combustion engine and asked, "How do we redesign mobility?" This is a much more exciting question, because then we can focus on solutions that are accessible and serve the majority of people; not the handful who can afford a new Tesla. In fact, if we made cities LESS car-friendly, they could be both safer and greener. The average car spends 95% of its life parked; imagine if we repurposed all that space, as well as roads, for community allotments, local gardens, playgrounds, cycling infrastructure, public transport... which lead to cleaner air, improved climate resilience, and healthier, happier people. "Sustainability" should not the end goal; but the means to creating a fairer, more equitable society. . . . . . . #justice #equity #climateaction #activism #action #speaker #business #sustainablebusiness #technology #leaders #leadership #people #sustainability #ecoanxiety #science #EVs #ElectricVehicles #climatedenial
