Sudan cannot become a forgotten crisis. As humanitarian needs in the country escalate, with 13 million people displaced, including 3.3 million refugees and vital infrastructure destroyed, the crisis continues to receive limited global attention. Only 7% of the $4.2 billion humanitarian appeal has been funded. Our Executive Director Jorge Moreira da Silva spoke with FRANCE 24 following his recent mission to Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia. He addressed the scale of displacement, the destruction of essential infrastructure and the urgent need for international investment in early recovery. “We also need to think about early recovery. The monsoon season is coming very quickly. We need to act fast and we need to have unimpeded access to do so.” One month later, as communities struggle to cope with the aftermath of the devastating Myanmar earthquake, the window to act is closing fast. The BBC News spoke with UNOPS Sara Netzer on the ground about the human toll – and the determination driving recovery efforts. Watch the full BBC interview here.

As the world faces climate risks, rapid urbanization and rising inequality, we must reimagine how we protect workers, especially in fragile and remote areas. At UNOPS, we’re using digital tools to transform health and safety practices across the East Asia and Pacific region. 🌍 World Malaria Day 2025 | Malaria Ends With Us Today malaria still claims a life every single minute — EVERY single minute- and 95% of those lives are lost in Africa. This is not just a regional problem — it’s a global injustice. While we have made huge progress globally — averting 12.7 million deaths since 2000 — nearly 600,000 people lost their lives to malaria last year alone. Every one of those lives could have been saved.   At #UNOPS, we proudly host the amazing team of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria led by Michael Adekunle Charles— the world’s largest platform dedicated to eliminating malaria, a mission it has championed since 1998. Together, we work to unite action across sectors and countries to end this deadly disease once and for all. This #WorldMalariaDay, we call on the global community to: 🔁 Reinvest in proven interventions and stronger health systems. 💡 Reimagine strategies to overcome drug resistance and inequities. 🔥 Reignite political will, sustainable financing, and local leadership. Malaria thrives where health systems are weakest and access to care is most limited. Millions continue to suffer due to delayed diagnosis, poor access to services, and insufficient financing. That must change. Ending malaria is not just a health goal — it's an act of equity, justice, and global solidarity. Let’s double down on solutions that leave no one behind. Malaria ends with us. 👉 Discover how the RBM Partnership to End Malaria is driving life-saving change and accelerating progress towards a malaria-free world.  🤝 Interested in joining the RBM Partnership? Just concluded a great mission to #Ethiopia 🇪🇹 I am honoured to have had the opportunity to visit Ethiopia and witness first-hand the incredible work being carried out by UNOPS in partnership with the Government of Ethiopia, the United Nations family, and our other development partners. I met with H.E Taye Atske Selassie, the President of Ethiopia, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Health and State Ministers of Agriculture. We discussed national development needs and priorities, and how UNOPS can support. In Addis Ababa also had the opportunity to meet with Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, to discuss the practical solutions UNOPS can provide to the African continent on infrastructure and procurement. In our conversation we focused especially on energy, climate and transportation. UNOPS is proud to support Ethiopia’s journey towards peace and sustainable development. For over 15 years, we have offered practical solutions to strengthen national capacity and capability to deliver quality services in #Ethiopia, drawing on our expertise in sustainable procurement, project management and infrastructure. For instance, in #Tigray, where the conflict has had a devastating impact on millions of people and left communities without access to basic services, in partnership with the Government and the The World Bank Group, we have rehabilitated and reconstructed 42 #schools and 34 #health facilities, and hundreds of #water pumps and #sanitation facilities. The results of our work in Tigray will leave a tangible #impact on the communities’ lives. Over 367,000 people have benefited from these improvements, including nearly 190,000 women and nearly 39,000 internally displaced people. UNOPS is also working - across the country - on healthcare services, including by procuring and delivering vital equipment and supplies, as well as infrastructure and mine action activities. As UNOPS we reaffirm our commitment to Ethiopia and its people. We stand ready to scale our support. I want to thank my fantastic team in the Africa Region, led by Dalila Gonçalves, and in the MCO Horn of Africa, led by Worknesh Mekonnen Mekonnen, for the outstanding impact of our projects. I have just concluded a 2-days UNOPS mission to #Sudan 🇸🇩 This is one of the largest humanitarian crisis ever. The last two years of a devastating conflict, has led to immense human suffering and widespread destruction. Nearly half of the population needs urgent humanitarian assistance and almost 13 million are forcibly displaced. In my mission I had the opportunity to speak to communities that are internally displaced listening to their needs and aspirations. I also had very fruitful conversations with the government - Minister of Finance, Minister of Health and Chair of the High Committee for Coordination with UN - to discuss concrete projects on humanitarian assistance and early recovery, namely on the removal of unexploded ordnance and on the rehabilitation of infrastructure on health facilities, water and energy. And finally, with UNOPS Africa Regional Director Dalila Gonçalves, Horn of Africa Director Worknesh Mekonnen Mekonnen, I engaged with my fantastic #UNOPS Sudan Team led by munier gaafar mohammed. In the face of immense needs UNOPS stands committed to scaling up our operations to respond to urgent and recovery needs of the communities, including those that have been displaced. We call on the parties to immediately cease the fighting and to engage in a genuine dialogue. And we call on the donors to urgently scale up funding Along with the UN family, #UNOPS stands with the people of #Sudan 🇸🇩 My statement 👇 https://lnkd.in/dE_i39ym
