We think outside the box to find sustainable approaches to the use and reuse of building materials. In our new video series ‘Outside the Box’ we deliver a mystery box to Graham Dodd, Arup Fellow. Inside the box, Graham finds some objects – an egg timer, a tyre-grooving tool and a double-glazed window unit. Using each object inside the box, Graham shows us a simple and effective way to recover, reuse and recycle glass – a playful demonstration of Arup’s long held passion for the circular economy and sustainable approach to using materials. Arup Fellows are exceptional practitioners with a deep commitment to delivering excellence for our clients on our projects today, while helping our clients prepare for opportunities and challenges in the future. They have a special role at Arup to inspire and enable our people to be creative and innovative in their work. They bring a willingness to embrace uncertainty and complexity, and work to solve the intractable challenges needed to build a sustainable future for all. There’s a lot of buzz in the galaxy these days about climate change. After working with Mr. Calrissian in Cloud City for the past two years, our own Brice Richard has taken on an even tougher challenge. We can confirm the rumours that Mr. Vader has recently altered the deal, but we are hoping he doesn't alter it any further. Best of luck, Brice. Happy #StarWarsDay!
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫? To celebrate Star Wars Day (May 4th), I collaborated with Darth Vader, Sustainable Force Officer, to produce this ground-breaking report. From Bantha biogas to clean Quadanium steel mining, discover the many ways we can take the Empire from the Dark Side to the Green one. (Huge thanks to Enrico Zara, Kristian Steele and Gaurav Kumar - Master Jedis in Decarbonisation - for sense checking this document). #maythe #starwars #starwarsday #greenbuilding #sustainability #climatechange #netzero

Ever wonder where safety fits in the climate change puzzle? Last Sunday was the International Labour Organization's World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2024. It was a day to connect the dots between our planet’s health and our own. This prompted three of our experts to reflect on the intersection between safety, risk, and climate change, and identify four pressing issues. How can organisations best leverage the power of sustainable, impactful partnerships to drive change? To design, deliver, and fund innovative solutions, we need new partnerships and partnership models. This includes supporting catchment-level partnerships and considering high-integrity markets as an efficient and effective way of forming relationships. Our study, “A New Future for Water,” underscores the necessity of true partnership to achieve common outcomes and provides insights into how partnerships can be structured. The report also delineates eight pivotal attributes that forward-thinking organisations must adopt to progress in the years ahead. We're proud to have contributed to the latest insight briefing from the Energy Transitions Commission, “Overcoming Turbulence in the Offshore Wind Sector”, that highlights the need for governments and the offshore wind industry to join forces to restore confidence in the vast potential of offshore wind. One of the five recommendations calls for ensuring that wind turbine and component production can achieve economies of scale based cost reductions by encouraging harmonisation of turbine components and sizes. The new Taikoo Li commercial complex in the Qiantan International Business Zone, Shanghai, presented us with the opportunity to help develop a quality urban space putting wellness and sustainable living at the centre. Our engineering services and façade design at the luxury lifestyle shopping, restaurant and leisure development – consisting of several independent multi-storey buildings connected by a pedestrian bridge and corridors – have helped achieve WELL Platinum certification, LEED Gold certification and Two Star Green Building Label in China. Using multiple measures, we have developed a sustainable and energy-saving MEP design. Systems enhanced and monitored indoor air quality for the benefit of the occupants. Water quality was also improved via a water purification and direct drinking system. Measures were even implemented to minimise the impact of cooking smoke or grease from the complex’s restaurants on the building’s façade. Did you know that as of 2022, 760 million people didn't have access to electricity, while nearly one in three people still lack access to clean cooking facilities? This lack of energy access disproportionately affects women and girls as it directly limits their available time to pursue education and income-generating activities. This unequal access reinforces existing gender and social inequalities and hinders progress towards the sustainable development goals. To address these multiple challenges, we've joined with UNOPS and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to publish new guidelines on how to practically implement inclusive approaches to energy infrastructure development. Explore the report and discover how we can empower communities and fuel progress by making energy access universal and inclusive: https://lnkd.in/eVqnxi24 #WeAreArup #InclusiveEnergy #SustainableDevelopment #PowerForAll

When building a complex for wellness, the atmosphere within needs to work in tandem with the concept. We have helped achieve this at H Zentre, a 20-storey wellness and healthcare hub in the Tsim Sha Tsui area of Hong Kong. We provided sustainable building design among other services to the project, which is the first in Hong Kong with a Platinum rating in both provisional and final assessment under the BEAM Plus New Building v2.0 scheme. The neighbourhood-friendly and sustainable building was developed following the S.E.E.D. concept – salubriousness, energy and resources efficiency, evolving building and decent environment – to ensure the health and wellbeing of its users. We designed a ventilation system to control fresh air and installed UV lamps to kill airborne pathogens. Amongst other benefits, our contribution has helped reduce the building’s carbon emissions by 23% and annual water consumption by over 43%; a smart parking system has mitigated the need for drivers to wait with their engines idling, creating air pollution; and efficient glazing limits solar heat generation while occupants still have enough glass to enjoy the harbour view. Cardiff has welcomed more than a hundred representatives from United Nations agencies, national governments, and civil society organisations this week, all focused on how to bring long-term thinking about future generations into the heart of decision making. Hosted by the The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, this is an important preparatory meeting for the UN Summit of the Future, which will take place in New York this September. We are pleased to have participated in the Future Generations Forum, sharing our experience of applying techniques to enable long-term thinking, including work by our Foresight team with the Comisiwn Seilwaith Cenedlaethol Cymru / National Infrastructure Commission for Wales on community resilience to extreme weather. Strengthening the quality – and equity – of decisions that affect us all is an increasing focus for us and our clients. It was a happy coincidence that international and local attendees of the #FutureGenForum gathered at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama to hear about newly-unveiled Welsh sustainability qualifications, accredited by Wales’ exam board, WJEC. The college’s building is a landmark in Cardiff, renowned as a place where many celebrated performers have trained. Our acoustics experts were at the heart of redesigning the college, ensuring that the building’s 450-person recital hall, 160-seat theatre, and rehearsal spaces offer performers of all ages – and their audiences - an exemplary acoustic experience. Cutting-edge technologies have refined and enhanced users’ experience at the flagship AIRSIDE – a 1.9 million sq ft office, retail and leisure space in Hong Kong’s Kai Tak area – and have earned the development seven of the highest green and smart building final certifications. Using the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for the project, as well as our self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) smart building console, we have ensured AIRSIDE’s users will benefit from a low-carbon, comfortable and healthy environment. From the shape of the two-tower building to the water features reducing heat in a compact urban environment to carbon dioxide reduction, AIRSIDE is Hong Kong’s first private development to win seven of these prestigious sustainability awards. The building also utilises AI in a data collection system that detects and analyses people’s movements to avoid queues and crowding, and in our smart building console that predicts and factors in maintenance work.
