Proud to stand alongside Kinship as they continue to champion greater recognition and support for kinship carers. This powerful show of advocacy highlights just how vital their #ValueOurLove campaign is, and why change is so urgently needed. #KinshipCarers #PublicSector #ExtraChange #SocialImpact
Yesterday we were delighted to lead a workshop with Black and Asian #KinshipCarers, Kinship staff and stakeholders in the children's social care sector to translate the recommendations from our report 'Raised by Relatives: The experiences of Black and Asian kinship carers' into an action plan. The report, recently published by Kinship and the Rees Centre at the Department of Education, University of Oxford, revealed the challenges faced by Black and Asian #KinshipCarers when trying to access crucial support. Yesterday was an opportunity for kinship carers to examine and prioritise recommendations from the report that they felt would have the most potential impact for kinship families. They were subsequently able to co-produce a series of actionable steps from our report's recommendations. During the workshop we also heard from the incredible Sharon McPherson from Families in Harmony who generously shared her personal experience, as well as her many years of work campaigning for racial equity in #KinshipCare. The workshop was also attended by some amazing supporters and stakeholders, including Fidelma Hanrahan from National Children's Bureau and Research in Practice, Melanie Powell from Richmond and Wandsworth Councils, Judith McNeill from the KPMG Foundation, Ann Horne from CoramBAAF and Sukriti Sen from Coventry City Council. Aunt kinship carer Barbara who attended the workshop shared: "Today I learned so much about the experiences of other Black and Asian kinship carers and the report recently published by Kinship. We were able to use the time today to think outside the box about how we can change the system. Today we were able to stamp our feet on the ground and show that we are here and we can work together to make change." A huge thank you to all our attendees, including Barbara and the other kinship carers who kindly shared their expertise and lived experience. Thanks also to Laurelle Brown Training and Consultancy and TPXimpact | B Corp™ for facilitating an inspiring and collaborative workshop. And finally a big thanks to our partners at the Rees Centre at the Department of Education, University of Oxford (especially Julie Selwyn and Dr Priya Tah) as well as to the KPMG Foundation for supporting this important research and wider programme of work. What happens when local government doesn’t just consult communities - but truly shares power with them? That’s the shift we explored with Shefali K. and Manchester City Council, as part of a mission-led approach to rethinking how public services are designed and delivered. Together, we focused on building trust, aligning services with what really matters to people, and enabling long-term change - from the ground up.
