In our new ‘Get to Know’ series, we’re highlighting our employees by sharing a little bit about their background, their role and what they enjoy most about working at CitySwift. This month Senior Data Scientist, Helen Gallagher, is in the hot seat. 📋A little bit about Helen’s background… I grew up in the west of Ireland and later moved to Athlone to study Design in Visual Communications. After graduating, I worked as a graphic designer, mainly focusing on print and illustration. I did that for a few years, working in different parts of Ireland and even spending a short time in Canada. Then in 2020—without ever having written a line of code—I decided to take a leap and start a HDip in Data Analytics with Visualisation. At first, it was the visualisation side that caught my interest, but as I got deeper into the course, I found myself really drawn to programming, stats, and machine learning. To keep building on that, I went on to do a Master’s in Data Analytics—and I haven’t looked back since! 🚍Helen’s journey at CitySwift… After finishing my Master’s in 2022, I joined CitySwift as a Graduate Data Scientist. I’m part of the team that handles the very start of the data journey—we take in all the raw bus data and transform it into something useful for the rest of the company. Starting a new career in a completely different field was daunting at first, but the team was really supportive and helped me get up to speed quickly. I spent my first year in a graduate role, then moved into a Data Scientist position, and earlier this year, I was promoted to Senior Data Scientist. 👩🔬What Helen enjoys about working at CitySwift… The culture here is really positive and collaborative—it makes such a difference to how you work. There are so many talented people on the team, and everyone's open to sharing their knowledge, which makes it a great environment for learning. I’ve honestly learned way more about buses than I ever expected to! Day-to-day, the work is genuinely interesting. It’s a complex domain with loads of challenging and unique problems to solve, which keeps things exciting. And the best part? Knowing that what we do has a real, positive impact on millions of people’s bus journeys.
