The London Healthy Urban Development Unit (HUDU) helps to create healthy sustainable communities and ensure that new developments are planned with health in mind.
HUDU works with local, London wide and national organisations on behalf of the NHS. We provide specialist expertise and advice to enable the health and planning sectors to work together effectively to improve the health and wellbeing of London’s diverse communities.
More than 42,000 new homes will need to be built each year in London to accommodate the projected growth in population. This creates enormous opportunities to improve services and facilities to meet changing healthcare needs.
About the Role
We are currently looking to recruit a graduate with excellent knowledge of the links between health and planning, and a good understanding of the health impact assessment and/or environmental assessment processes and how they can identify impact on health and well-being. A good knowledge of parts of London, and the wider environmental issues impacting on health is required. We are a small dedicated team (based near Waterloo) working on Health and Planning issues.
What You're Gonna Do
- Monitor and analyse boroughs local plans, and planning policies relating to health and the use of Health Impact Assessments.
- Analyse health infrastructure needs and key population characteristics at different geographies across London.
- Produce evidence based reports and monitoring documents to support policy development and practice reviews.
- Carry out research into all aspects of healthy urban planning.
- Monitor government, GLA and borough publications
- Liaise with a range of stakeholders within the NHS, local government and other agencies.
About You
- Candidates must have a good degree in Planning, Environmental Studies, Public Health.
- Good knowledge of Health Impact Assessments and/or Environmental Statements and ability to understand these and identify health and well-being issues.
- Understanding of the wider determinants of health and well-being and the role planning can have in minimising adverse health impacts and supporting good mental and physical health.
- Good knowledge and experience of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel,
- Strong analytical skills and able to use spreadsheets and databases to analyse large and complex datasets
- Good attention to detail combined with an ability to extract key messages from complex analysis
- Able to work with minimal supervision and to effectively organise and prioritise workload
- Good communication skills, and ability to develop effective working relationships with other parts of the NHS, boroughs and other agencies.
- Able to work to tight deadlines and to manage a number of different projects at any one time
- Experience of urban planning and /or public health would be an advantage.
