About Us
Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company that tackles cities' greatest challenges. We create products and solutions, invest in new companies, and help developers build more sustainable, innovative, and equitable places around the world. Our ambitious vision requires us to push ourselves beyond conventional thinking, and we work hard in pursuit of our mission. Our cross-disciplinary team consists of experts from real estate, urban planning, government, finance, technology, and engineering, among other backgrounds.
Our urban innovations include Delve (a generative design product that empowers real estate teams to design better, faster, with less risk), Mesa (an easy-install kit for commercial buildings that cuts energy costs, improves tenant comfort, and simplifies building operations), Pebble (a low-cost vehicle sensor to help manage parking and curb space), and Affordable Electrification (a new way to manage home energy use to meet a customer’s monthly budget). We're also developing an offsite construction company that can deliver high-quality mass timber buildings for more sustainable living and working.
With the potential to radically improve quality of life in cities for all, our work is both exciting and complex. We are working to achieve something unprecedented — help us build it!
About the Role
We are looking for a strong Associate, who will support, take charge of initiatives, and work across the team and workstream. You will report directly to the Director of Sustainability, Charlotte and have dotted line reporting to the Associate Director. The role is meant as a utility player, and provide leverage for the Director, with typical work being:
- Corresponding with stakeholders; reaching out to researchers, academics, tech companies as required by the group. Providing information about the project and soliciting engagement.
- General research and exploration of new products, vendors and technologies as directed by the team, and at times supporting our technology teams in the same
- Project Management for delivery of the Sustainability plan and content for Toronto, including processing, tracking and addressing edits, comments, and visuals
- Create slide decks and one-pagers, e.g. summarizing strategy, work plans, pitches and budgets
- Coordinate team meetings, handle incoming solicitations, and help the team function efficiently and effectively
- Market mapping and technology exploration to address sustainability issues impacting sites outside of Toronto
Beyond the above, we expect that over time, you will generate and lead other projects, e.g. making our own office more sustainable with green purchasing and carbon accounting.
What You're Gonna Do
After 3 months, you have…
- Been instrumental in the team’s delivery of a world-class Master Innovation and Development Plan (MIDP) chapter. You have generated narratives and slide decks for meetings with government and other stakeholders that summarize the strategy with particular attention to their domains.
- Directed the team’s delivery against our OKRs, led several months worth of team meetings, and kept colleagues and executives outside of the Sustainability team up to date on our projects.
Initiated and overseen the development of scopes and contracts for new consultants and consultant extensions. You wrote the scope based upon a list of bullets from the Director, and pushed the process through Legal and Procurement.
- Identified 10 projects where a new technology had been implemented and spoke to several customers to confirm that it worked. You uncovered a cost of operation that had not been discussed by the vendor.
Within 6 months, you have…
- Become the person to whom the company turns first for concise updates and input from the Sustainability team, often in the form of strategy slide decks . Your work needs few edits, and you not only have a complete understanding of the Sidewalk Toronto Sustainability strategy, but can determine what does and does not apply to sites outside of Toronto for the purpose of business development.
- Scoped and contracted out market mapping of new technologies and ideas for a water conservation strategy that would be applicable for a Sidewalk development/ planning exercise in an area of the world with water-scarcity.
- Edited, wordsmithed and inserted visuals for two infrastructure RFP’s, and managed the distribution and answer/response process.
- With support and supervision by the Associate Director, created a pool of interns and consultants to whom you direct research and writing projects needed by the team to save yourself time and energy. You have a small budget that you manage to maximize time efficiency and value.
- Begun working with Engineering, Operations and other colleagues to develop an ongoing carbon footprint and energy cost tracking tool, and compare it to our aspirations for commercial tenant energy use of Quayside. This is a side project for all involved, but the team is motivated and making progress.
