About the Role
Space Engagers is now working on a number of projects including an EU H2020 Smart Cities and Communities (SCC) Innovation Action project called +CityxChange (@plusCities) with partners in Limerick and Trondheim (Norway), exploring the concept of Positive Energy Blocks through research and experimentation in energy efficiency, e-mobility, and urban regeneration.
The advertised post is for a Future Cities Consultant to work predominantly on the +CityxChange project in a part-time capacity. The successful applicant will work directly alongside our Director, Philip Crowe. A work plan has been developed and most tasks have commenced. Space Engagers collaborates closely with Limerick City and County Council, University of Limerick (UL), the Norwegian Technical and Science University (NTNU) and Trondheim Kommune on this project.
What You're Gonna Do
The tasks required will evolve over the duration of the project but will generally involve project management, research, innovation, design, and workshops facilitation, for example in relation to:
- the co-design and development of a framework for a physical and virtual ‘Innovation Playground’ where citizens and other urban stakeholders collaborate and participate, and where new ideas emerge, evolve and get tested;
- the co-design and implementation of Innovation Playgrounds in Limerick, Trondheim and ‘Follower Cities’ (in Spain, Estonia, Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria);
- the creation of a network of ‘Positive Energy Champions’; a ‘Bold City Vision’; and the creation of ‘energy communities’ with Limerick partners;
- case study research of precedents for ‘Innovation Playgrounds’ and civic tech;
- coordination of Climathons (Climate KIC model) and other co-creation workshops/hackathons.
About You
Essential criteria:
- a Masters’ degree (level 9 NFQ) and at least 5 years’ experience in a relevant area such as urban planning, urban conservation, urban policy, urban design, urban resilience, architecture, energy efficiency, future cities, citizen participation and engagement, climate change mitigation and adaptation, behaviour change, civic tech, GIS, digital cities, smart cities.
- excellent interpersonal, influencing and change management skills;
- the ability to work autonomously and also within a remote multi- and trans-disciplinary team;
- effective time and workload management skills, with proven ability to meet deadlines;
- a track record in undertaking independent and rigorous research and analysis;
- a talent for innovating, thinking outside the box, and exploring new ways of doing things;
- the ability to think spatially and synthesize complex challenges into original and future-facing design proposals and ideas;
- the ability to communicate and distil complex information through drawings, diagrams, writing and presentations;
- a high proficiency in English language skills.
Desirable criteria:
- Doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in a relevant area (see above);
- a keen interest in the transition to a low carbon economy and society, and working towards the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities;
- the capacity to think in systems and make connections between disciplines, issues, research and people;
- experience designing and developing workshops, hackathons and other co-creation processes;
- experience using GIS and/or civic tech applications;
- experience working on large research projects with multiple Work Packages and partners across borders;
- understanding of Irish and EU policies and regulations relating to the built environment, cities, climate change and energy;
- knowledge of funding opportunities for research and social enterprises, and experience of putting together funding applications.

What We Offer
Title of post: Future Cities Consultant / Urban Resilience Consultant
Location: Limerick or Dublin regions. Position will involve working from home or a co-working facility.
Contract type: Part-time. Hours and contract negotiable.
Duration: 2 years with potential for continuation.
Starting date: negotiable.
Salary: €40-50,000 p.a. pro rata (dependent on experience and qualifications).
