About the Role
Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems (BTUS) Division has an opening for Scientific Engineering Associate!
In this role, you will apply energy modeling techniques to simulate and evaluate performance of buildings and apply data-driven approaches to analyze building performance data. We are looking for a strong background in building performance simulation using EnergyPlus and data analytics using data tools or customized scripting.
The BTUS Division advances energy efficiency in the built environment—one of the world's most critical energy and environmental challenges. Through research, partnership programs, and software tools, we promote energy and cost savings while improving comfort, health, and safety.
What You're Gonna Do
- Develop EnergyPlus simulation models based on building plans, drawings and specifications.
- Run and quality control EnergyPlus models.
- Analyze simulation results and troubleshoot issues.
- Analyze buildings data using data-driven approaches to extract insights.
- Collaborate with team members on joint tasks and activities.
- Present simulation results at project and team meetings.
- Contribute to the writing of technical reports or conference papers.
About You
What is Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience or the equivalent combination or education and experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience using EnergyPlus to model and evaluate the performance of building technologies.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of data analytics to analyze building data.
- Programming knowledge of Python or C++.
What We Desire:
- Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge) in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or a related field in Building Science and Technologies.
- Knowledge of OpenStudio or other building energy modeling tools.
What We Offer
This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year, Term appointment with the possibility of extension for up to a maximum of 5 years based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
