About the Role

Join our Urban Strategy Branch in the City Strategy and Place Group, which drives urban design, strategy, city planning, heritage, planning policy and transport strategy to better prepare Melbourne for the future. Contribute to the design and planning of our future city so that it is thriving and resilient, and enables all communities to flourish. Key to the success of this role will not only be your urban design expertise and demonstrated experience but also your skilled communication, stakeholder engagement and graphic design skills. You will be confident in making logical, informed and supportable urban design decisions and exercise discretion in the delivery of projects.

What You're Gonna Do

Reporting through to the Team Leader Urban Design and Design Review and working in a team of eight, the Urban Designer will collaborate across the branch and organisation to provide strategic, creative and spatial design thinking and expertise to the city. You will contribute to urban design reviews, built form advice, streetscape improvement plans and masterplans that shape our city. You will work closely with planning professionals and other disciplines to produce integrated design and planning solutions. In particular, this position will help support the work of the Heritage team and so heritage experience is an advantage and an interest in heritage is critical.

About You

- Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne values – accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence - Relevant tertiary qualification in architecture / landscape architecture, and either professional qualifications or practice experience in urban design - Previous experience in providing clear and effective design critique and commentary on development proposals, including negotiating high quality design outcomes with development groups - Ability to input into the development of planning policy (strategic and statutory), including the analysis and testing of built form proposals that can support planning scheme amendments - Ability to propose imaginative and deliverable urban design strategies that respond to community needs, urban trends, spatial context and history of place (including indigenous cultural history) - Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, high level graphic competency, including hand drawing and digital graphics (3D, Adobe Creative Suite), and the ability to propose clear narratives and presentations. Desirable: - Previous relevant experience in both government and private sectors - Previous experience working with heritage or a strong interest in the heritage of our city. - Knowledge of the history and contemporary context of the City of Melbourne including the spatial composition and an understanding of current development activities and trends.

Salary

$89,674 + 9.5% Superannuation
