About the Programme

In September we offer a 4-day workshop with Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman as part of the Ministry of Make! initiative. The results will be exhibited at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in October 2022. Just like many other countries in the world, the Netherlands is currently facing multiple crises; next to a housing shortage of 1 million homes, we have to deal with the consequences of climate change, soil subsidence, a nitrogen surplus and the energy transition. Therefore ZUS, MANN and the International Architecture Biennial of Rotterdam have taken the initiative to initiate the Ministry of Make! - calling on a hundred design teams to use their collective knowledge and imagination to come up with new designs for the Netherlands. With this, they want to contribute to the radical renovation of the Netherlands in a sustainable and responsible manner with respect to future generations. Each team is asked to conduct research and develop a design for 10,000 climate-proof homes at one of the 100 test locations, using a specially developed kit that contains everything necessary to build a model. During this studio, we will work as a team to research one of the test sites. We will visit the location and invite inspiring speakers to provide input and give us direction. Eventually, we will develop a future-proof concept for 10,000 sustainable homes. The result will be united with the other 99 models at the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, where they will be exhibited from 14 October – 13 November in an old natural gas container in Rotterdam. Participation fee: 200 euros. The course needs a minimum of 8 and has a maximum of 15 participants. Those who register will be informed at least two weeks in advance whether the course will continue.

About Us

The Independent School for the City is a playground for all urban thinkers, do-ers and designers – based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It brings together critical and experimental ideas in the field of urban research, design, strategy and activism. Through a range of diverse activities, urban professionals can discuss and develop ideas to tackle the challenges facing the modern city. The School is an initiative of Crimson Historians and Urbanists and ZUS and is rooted in their practices of combining a critical and activist approach to the city with affecting real change through architectural and planning projects. It is founded on a strong belief in an incremental instead of a tabula rasa approach to city planning which blurs the line.
